The pilot boat peacock arrived in Astoria, Oregon in 1968. Her job was to carry expert pilots out in order to guide ships through the treacherous straits of the mouth of the Columbia river. The Pyles were experts in navigating the shifting sandbars that make the Columbia bar among the most dangerous on Earth.

The Peacock was designed as part of a class of rescue boats made to serve in the north sea out of Germany. She was self-righting, and built like a submarine in order to withstand a knockdown or rollover with all equipment, intact and functioning.

The peacock served The peacock served out of Astoria, Oregon for over 30 years, guiding more than 120,000 across the bar to and from ports on the Columbia and Willamette river systems. She she was a crucial piece of the trade link between the Pacific Northwest and world markets.
