The market squid gathers in enormous schools off the west coast of North America ranging to about 200 miles off the shore. It name - Dorytuethis opalescens - comes from the shimmering translucence of the squid in the water. Like many other cephalopods, they are capable of changing their own color depending on mood, need for camoflage, or in order to attract mates.
